Lochnagar Crater
Northern France reverberated to the ‘Runs exhausts as first stop was the Lochnagar Crater. ‘Runners marvelled and were also quietly contemplative, at the scene of what was the largest explosion in Europe in WW1. The explosion was so loud it could be heard in London! The checkpoint was a chunk of rock from Lochnagar itself, brought in tribute by the RAF Mountain Rescue Association from the Balmoral Estate from the crater’s namesake mountain. Further checkpoints included a fairytale castle, with the longest battlements in France, and other astounding features en route to Reims.
