Teams were joined by F1 and GT legend David Brabham at Taittinger's Chateau de La Marquetterie. A sumptuous dinner of lobster, lamb, aged cheeses and chocolate was companied by selected champagnes. A selection of auction prizes included a Jeroboam of 2005 Comtes, a Tom Ford clutch and a day with Aston Martin Racing.
All waited with baited breath to see who would win.
The finish line was a welcome sight. Having skirted vineyards and visited chateaux all teams reached Parc Fermé safely in Beaujolais by the allotted time. Competitors changed and got ready to join the mayor of Beaujolais for a very special evening.
On the start line at Taittinger's Reims Cellars, nerves were running high.
With 5 secret checkpoints to find, teams were looking forward to some of the finest driving in Europe.
The fancy dress theme for the navigation day was back to the eighties.
Anthony Reid was ready with the start flag, attired as Boycey from only fools and horses. First away was 'Boris' the Bedford off on his search for victory. Who would win Aston Martin V12 Roadster or DBS. Bentley GTC or Azure Convertible? Or would the Bristol, one of only nine made fly the flag? Who knows........
'Runners decided to travel in convoy to Tyne Cot. By kind permission of the CWGC the 'Run took its place in the largest British cemetery. Respondent in Quba shirts, teams stood to attention as John Surtess OBE stepped forward to lay a wreath on behalf of the 'Run.
After affirming that all on the 'Run would never forget, Drummer Ash Cole of the Coldstream Guards stepped forward and the last post echoed across Tyne Cot..... A two minute silence took place and Ash blew the Reveille to signal the ' Runs intent.
The cars then headed South for the Passchendaele museum where private guides awaited for a very special experience.
'Runners were greeted by guides for a special visit. Teams received insight into the battles, men and places that became a wasteland in 1914. During their tour they visited recreated dug outs underground and the trenches themselves.
The cars headed South via the Menin Gate, Ypres and onto Messine; and the ridge that all fought so hard to occupy. Cresting the ridge the cars followed the front line and steered for Champagne Taittinger in Reims; and the treats that awaited in its' Chalk Cellars. Chalk Cellars that were a hospital during the first world war, patients carvings still evident in the walls.
After a reception from the Taittinger family, teams sampled Taittinger Brut and Brut Rosé as they were given Clue One for the navigation challenge on the following day.
